Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

Have I bragged about my grandmother's bread here before? Well, let me tell you, it is the BEST! I am lucky to have two loaves in my freezer right now that I brought back from my recent trips to Texas with three other loaves we already have devoured.

She has made this bread for decades and always keeps her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren in good supply. Leading up to family gatherings when almost forty of us meet, she will bake up to twenty loaves a week and pack her freezer so we all can take loaves home with us, sweet little lumps wrapped up in foil.

The breadmaking has always been a two-person process, which breaks my heart now that my grandfather is gone. He always grinds the whole wheatberries on his antique grist mill so she has the freshest whole wheat flour to start with. She adds other good stuff to it like grapeseed oil and flaxseed. It seriously is delicious.

My kids get so excited when they see me pull the foil wrapped loaves out of the freezer. "Is that NanNaw's bread?" Squeals!

Tonight:

Minestrone soup with cabbage, kidney and cannellini beans, potatoes, and a soup starter
Spinach and red leaf lettuce salad with carrots and toasted pecans
NanNaw's bread with Earth Balance and honey

Wednesday night:

Broccoli, red pepper, carrots, edamame, onion, and garlic in brown sauce
Veggie gyozas
Apple

We were fresh out of fresh fruit tonight, which is devastating for the baby. He cries for "fruta" at every meal. And our little Blondie rolls his Rs like a nino perfecto. I'm proud. I threatened the older kids tonight to not say the "F" word. I didn't want to remind Callan that there was no fruta to be had.

But don't worry, I went to the store tonight after they went to sleep. There will be fruta for breakfast.

You?
